The Kindergarten Class Is Reading Off the Chart!

Prepsters Began Reading 5 Months Behind Grade Level

The Cornerstone Prep Kindergarten class began the school year with an average reading level 5 months behind grade level. This reading gap is representative of students from low-income homes and represents one of the major reasons Memphis students are not “Kindergarten ready” upon entering school for the first time.

The Kindergarten Class Now Reads Like First Graders!

Cornerstone Prep focuses heavily on all aspects of reading, including phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and phonics. This approach to education provides an ideal environment for students to learn to read at high levels. As of  February, 2012, the Kindergarten class average reading level increased by more than 1.5 grade levels, meaning the Kindergarten class now reads like first graders!

Look at the chart below to see that our Kindergarten students’ reading level is OFF THE CHART!
