Homework and Parental Involvement
Cornerstone Prep recognizes the
need for students to receive extended practice on skills taught in the
classroom setting. Students receive nightly homework, including Friday nights.
Students should be able to complete homework assignments with minimal help.
These homework assignments are designed to take students in the lower school
about 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.
Homework assignments are approximately
20 minutes per subject in the upper school. Upper school students will be
assigned 6 subjects of homework nightly.[1]
A recent study by Cooper, Lindsay, and Greathouse noted the relationship
between homework and student achievement. The authors noted that “excellent
schools assign significant homework.”[2]
Student success requires parents
to take an active role in their child’s success. Parents are asked to do three
things in support of student achievement at Cornerstone Prep:
- bring the student
to school on-time, ready to learn each and every day,
- review the student’s
homework each night, and
- attend school conferences to stay abreast of student
progress.

Excel Academy Charter School (Boston) and Boston Preparatory Charter School
have a similar practice in which students have 30 minutes of homework assigned
per subject per night. Students will not receive homework assignments over
Christmas Break. Students at these schools have earned distinction on the
Massachusetts State Tests (MCAS). (Site visit by Founding Principal 9/2/09
& 9/10/09).
