Academics

Our Cities Are Failing Our Urban Youth

Our cities are failing to provide our urban youth with the education needed to succeed like their suburban counterparts. Today, most elementary students in the Binghampton area of Memphis score "Ds" or "Fs" on standardized test for reading and mathematics. These critical components are directly linked to high dropout rates, difficulty in entering into the workforce, and likelihood of being involved in crime. Changing this trend will take a generation.

Cornerstone Prep Seeks to Counter the Trend

Cornerstone Preparatory School was founded to counter this trend in Binghampton. The school addresses the critical need for rigorous academic and spiritual development of Binghampton’s children. The school will launch with 30 Kindergarten students in August 2010 and add an additional grade each year through the fifth grade.

Built upon Best Practices in Urban Schools

To ensure that they will achieve the goals of the school, key staffers attended Building Excellent Schools in Boston to capture Best Practices in Urban Schools across the country. They learned that focusing on literacy and mathematics are imperatives that must be met before a child can succeed educationally.
